Prepare for Your Neurological Consultation

During a neurological consultation, the neurologist tries to determine the basis of the problem. To do that, one of the Noran Clinic neurologists will:

Take a medical history that may include information about:

  • The present problem
  • The reason for a neurological consultation
  • Past medical history
  • Hospitalizations
  • Surgical treatments
  • Medicines and medication allergies

Perform a neurological examination
The parts of the examination depend on the history and the problem, but could include:

  • Motor examination–checking muscle strength, mobility and reflexes
  • Sensory examination–checking touch, vibration and position
  • Cerebellar testing–checking coordination
  • Mental examination–checking memory
  • Cranial examination–checking eye and facial movements

Conduct diagnostic tests
After taking the history and doing the appropriate examinations, the neurologist usually understands the problem or knows which other tests need to be done. Tests often help the neurologists to confirm diagnoses and may lead to a specific treatment.

Tests may be done by a Noran Clinic radiologist, neuropsychologist or one of our technologists, depending on the test ordered. Common procedures needed for accurate diagnosis are X-rays, MRI scans, EEGs, and EMGs.

Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)
After your initial visit with a neurologist, you may be referred to one of Noran Clinic's advanced practice providers (APPs) for follow-up care. APPs are board certified nurse practitioners and physician assistants who practice in collaboration with the neurologists, providing a team approach in the management of patients' health care.

The goal of the APP is to provide you with greater continuity and access to neurological care. Their longer appointment times enable them to speak with you in depth about your diagnosis and test results. APPs are highly skilled in teaching and counseling to help you better manage your condition. They will report back to your doctor to keep him/her updated on your condition until your next follow-up appointment.
